LOTION VS BODY CREAM

Hello and welcome, internet traveler, to the latest NM Thera blog! This blog entry will be all about the differences between body lotions and body creams and their different benefits. Consider this a quick and easy to follow guide on skin hydration, and what kinds of moisture are ideal for different situations. Not only does a healthy moisturizing routine keep skin feeling healthy and vibrant, but the routine will also fight back aging signs, soften rough skin, and replenish moisture lost throughout the day.

Body lotions are the most common to find out in any local grocery store. They are a lightweight blend of water, oil, and emollients. Due to the high water content in lotions, they absorb into the skin very quickly and are very easy to spread around. Additionally, because lotions typically have higher proportions of water and lower proportions of hydrating ingredients, lotions require frequent application throughout the day. Oftentimes, lotions can leave a greasy residue on the skin.

Next up, are body creams. These are thicker than lotions, due to the lower amounts of water in them. Body cream is heavier than lotion and is also MORE hydrating than lotion, making cream a good choice for nighttime application. They are still easy to spread, and due to their higher oil content, create an ultra-hydrating barrier around the skin, locking in more moisture and protecting the skin from the environment. Additionally, body creams make for a better moisturizer in the winter, when the humidity in the air decreases and the air gets colder. Winter isn’t the only thing that will dry out skin. Too much time under air conditioning will deplete the skin of its moisture as well. Be mindful in the summer.

If you are unsure of what an emollient is, worry not! Emollients are a skin softener. They are made up of lipids that fill in any cellular gaps, caused by dryness or flakiness, in the skin, leaving it feeling soft and smooth. Emollients and moisturizer are, in fact, not the same thing! Moisturizing products can contain emollients as ingredients, but there are other substances that actually hydrate and moisturize the skin.
